Diabetes Education Center at Pennsylvania Hospital
Diabetes is a unique disease that affects every
individual differently. To provide superior individualized
care for inpatients and outpatients, Pennsylvania
Hospital uses a multidisciplinary approach to
provide the best treatment options. The diabetes
care team includes primary care doctors, endocrinologists,
ophthalmologists, nutritionists, podiatrists,
social workers and physical medicine therapists.
Pennsylvania Hospital also offers a wide range
of educational programs to assist with disease
management.
The Diabetes Education Center, a comprehensive
American Diabetes Association recognized self-management
teaching program,
holds sessions twice
weekly on an ongoing basis.
Classes provide information regarding nutrition,
exercise and use of medication as well as skill
training in blood sugar monitoring, insulin injections
and proper foot care. A physician referral is
required for participation in the four-session

In addition to patient and family education,
diabetes awareness programs are conducted for
business and industry as well as for special
needs groups such as school personnel and caregivers
of the developmentally disabled. Coordination
of special instruction for individuals who wish
to use the insulin pump is also provided.
