Mammograms - What should I
expect?
The Women's Imaging Center is operated by Pennsylvania
Hospital's Department of Radiology and is designed
for personalized care. When you come to the center,
a technical staff member will greet you, show
you to a private changing room, explain the procedure,
answer your questions and perform the mammography
examination. Results of the mammogram are available
immediately after the radiologist has reviewed
the examination. Referring physicians and patients
are promptly provided with an accurate diagnosis
that can aid in better care.
A member of the staff will also teach you the
proper technique of breast
self-examination, which is an essential part
of preventive breast cancer care. All staff members
are highly trained technologists and radiologists
who are experienced with the most advanced diagnostic
equipment. Minimally invasive stereotactic or
ultrasound core biopsies can be performed in the
Women's Imaging Center to obtain tiny pieces of
tissue for certain types of abnormalities seen
on the mammographic or ultrasound examinations.
Insurance coverage
All insurance plans require a prescription for
a mammogram. If you do not have a personal physician
to prescribe a mammogram, call PENNHealth's physician
referral service at 1-800-789-PENN (7366).
Osteoporosis Screening
Pennsylvania Hospital uses bone density testing
with a DEXA scan using low dose radiation to detect
osteoporosis. The results of DEXA scan is sent
directly to your physician.
