About Scheie Eye Institute

Scheie Eye Institute is the Department of Ophthalmology for the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Scheie Eye Institute is dedicated to:

  • excellence in patient care
  • educating future clinical ophthalmologists and vision scientists
  • community eye care needs through outreach
  • advancing the frontier of research to prevent blindness and vision loss

Research
At Scheie’s F.M. Kirby Center for Molecular Ophthalmology, scientists investigate the causes of important eye conditions that may be treatable with molecular therapies, including:

  • macular degeneration
  • diabetic retinopathy
  • hereditary retinal degenerations
  • cataract
  • severe myopia

Scheie is a world leader in research on retinal degenerations, especially age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and is consistently in the top five in the nation in funding by the National Eye Institute.
